Case Study: New Build Student Accommodation – Miles Street, London

A new smart fire prevention system was recently installed in a newly built student accommodation block in South London to minimise the risk of fires starting and spreading throughout the building.

The new and highly sought-after Firechief kitchen stove guard was chosen as the ultimate solution to minimising the risk of fires developing in the kitchen - the most common room for fires. In this case study we will explain exactly why the Stove Guard was needed in the 37-storey Miles Street development, as well as the various benefits of the device in student accommodation and other types of properties, too.

What was the need?

Vega is a 37-storey new build property in Vauxhall, South London, ideally located near universities such as the University of Westminster. The building itself houses a variety of 841 studio and shared student apartments and has a roof terrace, on site-gym and cinema room for student use,  as well as a six-storey open plan office.

As the student accommodation had cooking facilities which included a hob, fire safety protection was considered to be of particular importance.

What was the solution?

50% of all accidental dwelling fires start in the kitchen. However, the Firechief Kitchen Stove Guard provides a worry-free approach to managing cooker top safety without affecting cooking.

The Stove Guard does this by alerting the user of pre-fire conditions and if no action is taken, it automatically turns off the electricity supply to the cooker. The intelligent heat sensor in the Kitchen Stove Guard tracks the rate of increasing temperature, as a steeply rising temperature is an indication of a developing fire hazard.

The benefits of the Firechief Kitchen Stove Guard

  • Sleek sensor design, sympathetic to the modern décor of the apartment kitchens
  • Continuous 24/7 protection for peace of mind with no monthly testing required
  • Easy and simple installation by the electrical contractors working on site
  • Less than half the cost of a fire suppression system
