KM35021: What It Means, and Why It Matters

If you’ve ever searched for the term KM35021, you might have come across some older pages that mention fire blankets and product recalls.

That number (KM35021) refers to the valid BSI Kitemark certificate held by Firechief® for our fire blankets.

The BSI Kitemark is a widely recognised symbol of quality and safety in the UK. The British Standards Institute (BSI) awards the Kitemark to products that pass independent testing, meet the relevant safety standard and undergo regular audits and checks. In short, it’s a mark you can trust.

Our fire blanket kitemark, KM35021, has been in place since 1996 and continues to represent our long-standing commitment to tested and proven fire safety products.

So, what’s the story behind it?

Looking back: The 2015 context

In 2015, a customer contacted us with concerns after running their own in-house performance tests on a small sample of fire blankets.

At the time, the blankets were, as they still are, certified under BSI Kitemark certificate KM35021 and had passed routine, independent audit testing to the BS EN 1869:1997 standard.

Because customer safety is our top priority, we acted quickly. Working in partnership with BSI, we commissioned additional independent testing to review the customer’s findings. Those new tests confirmed that our blankets did meet, and always had met, the required performance standard.

Following that investigation, BSI reaffirmed the validity of the Kitemark approval, and no further action was required.

What about today?

Our fire blankets remain fully approved and listed under KM35021, now tested under the latest BS EN 1869:2019 standard.

Today, our range includes:

Our fire blankets are rigorously tested, certified by BSI, and designed to provide safe, reliable performance in real-world fire emergencies.

As with every Firechief® product, they’re backed by a quality assurance process that’s consistent, traceable, and independently verified.

Why do KM35021 articles from the past still appear online?

Although we fully resolved the situation in 2016, some of the original recall notices from unrelated suppliers and historic articles still appear in search results. Unfortunately, that’s simply the nature of online content.

We want to ensure that when people come across that Kitemark number today, they have access to the full story and up-to-date information about our current certified products.

A mark of ongoing assurance

The BSI Kitemark is one of the most recognised symbols of product quality and safety in the UK and beyond. It signifies that a product:

  • Meets the relevant safety standard
  • Has been independently tested and audited
  • Is manufactured under a controlled quality management system
  • Is subject to ongoing surveillance and repeat testing

KM35021 continues to meet all of these criteria.

If you want to verify KM35021, you can do that here.

In summary

The safety and performance of our fire blankets have never been in question, not in 2015, and not now. We remain proud holders of the Kitemark certificate KM35021 and continue to work with BSI to maintain the highest standards in fire safety.

If you’ve seen KM35021 mentioned online or simply want to learn more about our fire blankets and certification, we’re always happy to help.
