How to Ensure Compliance & Adapt to The New PFAS Ban

On 4th July 2025, updated UK regulations came into force restricting the use, sale, and refill of AFFF foam extinguishers containing PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic Acid), a specific PFAS compound. This is a significant shift in how the fire industry approaches sustainability and compliance.

While the legislation doesn’t ban all PFAS chemicals, it does continue the move towards tighter control of persistent environmental pollutants, and this means businesses and fire safety professionals need to act with clarity.

We’ve already written a lot about how to prepare for the PFAS ban. In this guide, we’ll explain what the PFOA ban means, how to ensure compliance, and how to adapt your fire strategy with PFAS-free alternatives like our PureSafe extinguishers.

What are PFAS chemicals, and why the ban?

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of synthetic chemicals known for their resistance to heat, water, and oil. That’s why they’ve historically been used in firefighting foams, particularly aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF).

However, due to their persistence in the environment and links to health concerns, specific PFAS types like PFOS (banned in 2009) and now PFOA have come under regulatory scrutiny.

The latest restriction follows mounting pressure to reduce PFAS usage across the board and aligns with international efforts to phase out long-chain PFAS compounds such as PFOA, also known as C8.

For detailed guidance, see the FIA Guidance on PFAS Restrictions.

What the July 2025 PFOA ban means for your business

This isn’t a blanket PFAS ban, but it is still a critical milestone.

Many manufacturers, including Firechief®, stopped using PFOA in their foam formulas over a decade ago. So, if your extinguishers were manufactured after 2015, it’s highly likely they’re already PFOA-free and compliant.

However, any extinguishers manufactured before 2015, still labelled as containing AFFF with fluorinated compounds or where the formulation is unclear, should be audited and potentially replaced.

Failure to switch out non-compliant foam units could result in:

  • Enforcement action or fines from environmental regulators
  • Invalidation of insurance policies in the event of a fire-related claim

Why switch to fluorine-free fire extinguishers like PureSafe?

Firechief® PureSafe foam extinguishers are 100% fluorine-free, containing no PFAS compounds, including PFOA. That means they’re not just compliant today, they’re futureproofed for tomorrow.

They offer:

  • Class A and B fire performance
  • No environmental or regulatory liability
  • Proven reliability in commercial and public environments

The 5-step guide to ensuring compliance

  1. Audit: Record the location, age and content of all foam extinguishers on-site.
  2. Evaluate: Identify any units that may contain PFOA or have no clear formulation.
  3. Replace: Remove and source compliant alternatives such as Firechief PureSafe foam extinguishers.
  4. Dispose Responsibly: Use approved waste services for safe decommissioning of PFOA-based extinguishers.
  5. Update Training: Make sure staff are familiar with new units and update fire safety documentation.

Final thoughts on PFAS and going fluorine-free

The July 2025 regulation is a step forward, not a full stop, in the journey to eliminate PFAS from firefighting systems. While only PFOA is currently banned, momentum is growing across Europe and the UK toward broader fluorine restrictions.

That’s why now is the right time to switch to fluorine-free, PFAS-free extinguishers like the PureSafe range.
