Members of the Fire Depot team gathered for the company’s regular quarterly meeting yesterday at nearby Rutland Water.   After an early morning cruise of the lake and breakfast onboard the Rutland Belle, the team focused its attention on ways of improving the customer experience even further during the second half of 2018.

The morning was rounded off with an archery taster session, which proved popular with everyone and a well-earned lunch!

Managing Director Laurie Pollard commented; ‘The ethos of the company is that we are here to give our customers an easy life so we wanted to focus on new and better ways of doing just that, as well as saying thank you to the team for their hard work during the first half of the year.  Enjoying the beautiful surroundings just down the road from our offices seemed a good way to combine both!’.

As those in the Fire Industry are already aware, there is an imminent skills gap in terms of competent installers, technicians and engineers, with too few people coming into the industry to replace the experienced and knowledgeable professionals as they retire. Part of the problem seems to be that the Fire industry is largely ‘invisible’ to school and college leavers and without a career path and recognised qualifications, it’s quite hard for them to find out where to begin and where a career might lead.

Following the success of its courses earlier in the year, the Fire Depot Academy is pleased to announce the dates of its forthcoming Autumn 2018 courses as follows:

10 – 13 September 2018: Four Day Fire Extinguisher 'New Technician' Course:

Three days of theory and practical training followed by ‘Theory and practice of servicing portable fire extinguishers in accordance with the requirements of BS 5306 Parts 3 and 8’ examination on day four (invigilated by BAFE). The content of the course covers requirements of BS 5306-3 ‘Servicing and Maintenance’ and BS 5306-8 ‘Selecting and Positioning’. Delegates achieving 75% or more in each of the theory and practical assessments will receive the ‘Theory and practice of servicing portable fire extinguishers in accordance with the requirements of BS 5306 Parts 3 and 8’ examination certificate (issued by BAFE). This is part of the requirements in becoming a BAFE SP101 Registered Fire Extinguisher Technician.” For more information on what the course specifically covers, please click here.

15 October 2018: Fire Extinguisher Servicing & Maintenance Refresher Training Course:

A one-day refresher course on fire extinguisher servicing and maintenance. The course will provide trained technicians with valuable updates regarding legislation and standards, innovation in fire extinguisher technology and industry best practice, and will ensure compliance with the recommendations of BS 5306 for regular refresher training.

Laurie Pollard, Managing Partner at Fire Depot commented: ‘We were delighted with the feedback from the delegates who attended our courses earlier in the year.  ‘Highly educational’ and ‘enjoyable’ were the words used by many.

‘We know that these days our customer’s customers look not just for a good price but also for a reliable and trustworthy service. In a service-based industry, quality of delivery is key so  engineers need to provide a professional service and their knowledge can really help them stand out from competitors.  The Fire Depot Academy training courses aim to help engineers either acquire or refresh that all important knowledge’.

The simple purpose of a fire door in everyday use is just the same as any other door. However, since a breakout of fire is never predictable, the fire door, unlike any other door, is then required to perform its main purpose as part of a building’s passive fire protection system, allowing all rooms to be separated off to contain a fire, protect the occupants and provide a safe, protected route of escape.

But although fire doors are a critical element in fire safety and a requirement in every commercial, public and multiple occupancy building, their importance in saving lives is often overlooked.  No doubt we can all think of fire doors that we have seen wedged open or held open by an odd box or two!  These doors would simply be unable to close in the event of a fire, thereby putting the building’s occupants at significant risk.

Fire Depot is pleased to announce that it has the answer to this problem with the launch of a new product.  The Firechief Doorwarden is a wireless fire door stop which legally holds open a fire door - until the fire alarm sounds that is.

How the Firechief Doorwarden works

The Firechief Doorwarden acoustic fire door retainer is installed on the facing side of the fire door.   Once installed you simply select the "learn alarm feature" and set off your fire alarm for approximately 20 seconds.  The Doorwarden will then learn your fire alarm and activate.

And unlike other door closers on the market, the Firechief Door Warden only responds to the sound of the fire alarm.  Its anti-vacuum technology means it will not respond to vacuum cleaners or other ambient noise.

Many of us will remember Samsung's Lithium Ion battery problems which resulted in its Galaxy Note 7 recall last year but even though it won’t generally mean a product recall, it’s not as uncommon for this type of battery to catch fire as you might think;  which is why Fire Depot is pleased to introduce the Firechief Lith-ex, the world’s first fire extinguisher for Lithium Ion battery fires.

Why are Lithium Ion batteries used in electronic gadgets if there is a fire risk?

The main benefits of Lithium Ion batteries is that they are compact and lightweight, hold considerable charge and perform well under constant discharge-recharge conditions. And to date, they are the best option available in terms of the power the battery supplies for its size and weight, which is key to manufacturers being able to keep smartphones slim and light. That’s also why Lithium Ion batteries are now commonly found in other electronic products such as laptops, tablets, power tools, cameras, toys and electric scooters to name a few.

How to manage a Lithium-Ion battery fire

To understand why Lithium Ion batteries catch fire, it helps to understand how they work. The fact that their components have been designed to be lightweight, means there are thin partitions between the battery cells and only a thin outer covering. Both the partitions and coating are fairly fragile, so if they are punctured when the battery is damaged, a short occurs and this spark can ignite the highly reactive lithium.

Alternatively, the battery may overheat and the heat of the contents exerts pressure on the battery, potentially causing an explosion.

The advice from the Battery University, is that if you are using a device with a Lithium Ion battery and it starts to hiss or bulge, unplug it from the mains, remove the battery from the gadget if possible, and move it away from anything flammable.

The world’s first extinguisher for Lithium Ion battery fires

Should you need to fight a Lithium Ion battery fire, there’s only one fire extinguisher that will do the job. Fire Depot now stocks the Firechief Lith-ex, the world’s first fire extinguisher for Lithium Ion battery fires. The Lith-ex Extinguisher is compact, lightweight, easy to store, non-toxic and environmentally friendly. It will extinguish uncontrollable flames, quickly cool the excessive heat and prevent re-ignition, something that an ABC powder extinguisher will not be able to do.

Top tips to minimize the risk of fire or explosion

The risk of fire or explosion increases if the Lithium Ion battery is exposed to hot conditions or the battery or internal components are damaged, so simply dropping or crushing your mobile phone could cause it to catch fire. To reduce the risk of a battery fire incident:

• Avoid storing devices with lithium-ion batteries in places with high temperatures. such as in a hot vehicle or even a warm pocket.
• Avoid overcharging your devices.
• Avoid keeping all your lithium ion battery devices together. When you travel, especially on a plane, you'll likely have all your electronic items in one bag. This may be unavoidable but try to keep some space between the devices. Although having lithium ion batteries in close proximity does not increase the risk of a fire, if there is an accident, the other batteries could catch fire and make the situation worse. Lithium Battery Fires can quickly exceed temperatures of 800ºC - three times hotter than an oven!

With almost seven million people of working age in the UK having a disability, the issue of accessibility and the safe evacuation of a building’s occupants in the event of an emergency, is something that every business must ensure they address.

And while building design can be adapted to incorporate ramps, wider doorways for wheelchair access and passenger lifts for accessibility, these aren’t necessarily of any use in helping people to get out of a building in an emergency situation.

It is the responsibility of the occupier of a premises to ensure that all its occupants are safely evacuated in the case of an emergency. Fire risk assessments must, therefore, identify and consider anyone for whom mobility or serious illness issues mean that they need to use a lift to move up and down in a building and who would therefore be unable to exit the building in an emergency.

Fire stairs or escapes - are clearly inappropriate for such people. Even if it’s not an emergency evacuation caused by a fire or security incident, a lift failure or power outage could prove to be difficult and distressing for someone unable to use stairs.

Evac chair on stairs

This is where the inclusion of evacuation equipment such as an Evacuation Chair is vital as they offer a simple and effective solution to ensure a safe exit.

Fire Depot now stocks the eGO! Exitmaster Evacuation Chair, which offers the following benefits:

• Instantly deployed
• Manufactured and tested to the highest standards
• Comprehensive warranty and CE compliant
• Easy to open, load and travel downstairs
• Extra slim storage
• Auto-braked wheels when folded
• Includes wall mounting bracket and fitted cover

The decision to install this type of equipment will need to be taken on a building-by-building basis to fit the needs of each employee according to the fire risk assessment. It is also critical that there are people within the building who are trained to use the Evac chairs as although colleagues may be willing to help, without proper equipment or training, there is always a risk of personal injury in this situation.

Following the tragic events of the fire at Grenfell Tower in London earlier this year, fire safety and regulation and the need for qualified and professional technicians has finally had the much-needed attention - outside of the fire industry itself - that it deserves.

However, as those in the industry are already aware, the fire and security industries are facing a skills gap in terms of competent installers, technicians and engineers. There are too few people coming into the industry to replace the experienced and knowledgeable professionals as they retire. Part of the problem seems to be that the Fire industry is largely ‘invisible’ to school and college leavers and without a career path and recognised qualifications, it’s quite hard for them to find out where to begin and where a career might lead.

To help support training and professionalism in the industry, Fire Depot is now proud to launch the Fire Depot Academy with the first course dates announced for January and March 2018.

How can the Academy training help Installers and Maintainers?

These days customers look not just for a good price but also for a reliable and trustworthy service. In a service-based industry, quality of delivery is key so you need your engineers to provide a great service. They are out there on the front line, representing your company and the professional service and knowledge they provide to your customers can really help you stand out from your competitors.

Also, it’s worth bearing in mind that by training your staff, you are more likely to retain them as allowing them to continue developing their skills will help keep them motivated.

The first two courses offered by the Fire Depot Academy are as follows:

29 January 2018: Fire Extinguisher Servicing & Maintenance Refresher Training Course:

A one day refresher course on fire extinguisher servicing and maintenance. The course will provide trained technicians with valuable updates regarding legislation and standards, innovation in fire extinguisher technology and industry best practice, and will ensure compliance with the recommendations of BS 5306 for regular refresher training.

5 – 8 March 2018: Four Day Fire Extinguisher 'New Technician' Course:

Three days of theory and practical training followed by ‘Theory and practice of servicing portable fire extinguishers in accordance with the requirements of BS 5306 Parts 3 and 8’ examination on day four (invigilated by BAFE). The content of the course covers requirements of BS 5306-3 ‘Servicing and Maintenance’ and BS 5306-8 ‘Selecting and Positioning’. This is part of the requirements in becoming a BAFE SP101 Registered Fire Extinguisher Technician.” For more information on what the course specifically covers, please click here.

Laurie Pollard, Managing Partner at Fire Depot commented: ‘We are proud to have supported the fire trade with our unique partnership approach to business for more than 50 years. The Fire Depot Academy is the next step in providing this support ensuring that our customers have access to professional training to keep their skills, knowledge and expertise up to date. Take up for the courses has already been good so we would encourage anyone who is interested to register and book their place as soon as possible’.

Commercial fire alarm systems fall broadly into two categories - conventional and addressable, and although there are still some problems with battery life and wireless coverage, increasingly sophisticated wireless systems are also becoming more common too.

BS 5839-1: 2017 is the current code of practice that makes recommendations for the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems in non-domestic premises. Taking each of these elements in turn provides the four key pillars in supplying a commercial fire alarm system.

Design
The importance of designing the system correctly should not be underestimated. Firstly, the category of system to be installed should be determined - ideally the client or architect should specify this based on a risk assessment or the requirements of the insurance company and then a set of plans marked up. A site visit may be best if the building is already built, but in any event if the plans do not show the ceiling details further enquiry will be necessary to ensure the correct detector coverage is obtained.

An important part of BS5839-1 is the need to design the system to reduce or eliminate false alarms. It may be that a better type of detector can be specified or its position carefully selected, perhaps for example in a hotel bedroom where shower steam often can affect detectors if incorrectly sited. You can read more about how to prevent fire false alarms here in our previous blog post on the subject.

Installation
Good workmanship is essential during installation so ensure you use the recommended clips and saddles, and the correct spacing. Modern soft skin fire cables are designed and tested to be used at high temperatures, but only if they are correctly supported. The functionality of the cables in a fire situation relies on them being held in place and of course the requirement of BS 7671 Amendment 3 is to support all cables on or in escape routes with metal containment or fixings.

It is also important to record the routing of the cable on a plan. This not only complies with the need for an ‘as fitted’ drawing but is also vital should fault finding be necessary either at installation or later.

Commissioning and handover
It is vital that commissioning is undertaken carefully and correctly as systems that have not been correctly commissioned can lead to serious, potentially life-threatening consequences.

Firstly, the system needs to be inspected to ensure that it is in accord with the design. There will be a good reason why the designer required three detectors within a room, or put a break glass call point in a plant room, so you need to ensure that the design matches the installation. In fact, you also need to make sure that the building is covered to the specified category. Whilst inspecting this, the standard of workmanship needs to be carefully observed.

Check ALL equipment including cause and effect. The smoke and heat detectors are usually tested by proprietary testers, such as those in the Testifier range.

Ensure that all the sounders, beacons and relays are tested. Test and record the sound pressure readings. They must meet the requirement, which is usually 65dB, except for sleeping accommodation where 75dB at the bedhead is required.

Record everything and don’t ever assume that because a device is connected, it will set off the alarm. Test it to prove it!

Maintenance
Maintenance is critical in avoiding false alarms. Detectors do need to be checked at each service visit to ensure that there is no build-up of dirt or dust. They are best kept clean by using a detector duster spray on them.

All detectors should also be tested at least once a year. At Fire Depot we recommend and stock the Testifier range of testers to ensure that you complete the service efficiently and safely.

As most people know, a fire blanket is a sheet of flame retardant material designed to extinguish small fires as they start.   Fire blankets, for use in kitchens and around the home, should be made of either fibreglass or woven-nylon coated with silicone-based flame retardant. The fire blanket is folded and stored in a quick-release container which means it can be pulled out and placed over a fire to smother it.

At a recent trade show, a question we were frequently asked by people who had had a fire blanket for a several years, was how they could check that it was still fit for use.

So how do you ensure that a fire blanket is still effective?

The answer is by making a regular visual inspection.

Fire blankets should be visually inspected regularly – ideally monthly;  although Fire legislation in England & Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland suggests that good practice is to check whether a blanket has been used or damaged on a weekly basis. In the case of a commercial property, the building’s Responsible Person must also ensure that the fire blanket/s are checked by the fire equipment maintenance provider at least once every 12 months.

When carrying out a visual inspection of a fire blanket, you should ensure that*:

• It is unobstructed and visible. Kitchen furniture and equipment should not block easy access to the fire blanket.
• That the blanket is securely mounted to the wall in the pack or container with the pull-down straps positioned approximately 1.5 metres from the floor.
• The fire blanket container is not obviously damaged; there is no wear or damage to the fire blanket and it is clean and dust free and that the pull-down straps are visible and undamaged.
• Following the manufacturer’s instructions check that you can easily release the blanket from the container and then reassemble it according to the folding instructions.
• The instructions for use are clean and legible and face outwards.
• You check the age of the fire blanket -  consider replacing if it is more than seven years old.

The responsible person or maintenance company should record the results of these visual inspections and arrange for any necessary corrective action, such as providing a new fire blanket.

Fire Depot recommends using fire blankets manufactured from premium K100 glass fibre cloth and kitemark certified BS EN 1869. Our range of Firechief fire blankets also carry a 5-year guarantee for peace of mind.
