Earth Day 2026: Two Years On. Here Is What We Have Done.

Carbon-Journey-Earth-Day-2026

Two years ago, on Earth Day 2024, we announced our partnership with Auditel and took our first formal steps on the road to Net Zero. We made a commitment. Today, we want to show you what that commitment has looked like in practice.

Protecting people and protecting the planet. For us, they are the same job.

As a fire safety manufacturer, it would be easy to see sustainability as something separate from our core purpose. It is not. At Firechief®, our commitment to making the world a safer place extends beyond the products we make. It includes how we make them, how we run our business, and the choices we ask our team to make every day.

Generating our own clean energy

This year we installed solar panels with battery storage on our head office roof. If you have seen the drone footage, you will have a sense of the scale. The building beneath those panels has its own story to tell in due course. Watch this space.

Generating our own power and storing what we do not immediately use reduces our reliance on the grid directly. It is infrastructure, not gesture, and it will keep delivering carbon savings year after year.

A more efficient distribution centre

Our distribution centre has recently moved to a purpose-built, modern facility. Better insulated and more energy efficient than its predecessor, the new building was driven by the operational needs of a growing business. The carbon benefits came with it. An older building consumes more energy to heat, light and run. The new one does not. It is one of those decisions that makes commercial and environmental sense at the same time.

Reducing the carbon cost of every delivery

Sustainability lives in the products we design and the way they move through the supply chain. We have been working on both.

We are rolling out flat-pack and compact formats across our range. The logic is straightforward: products that take up less space, ship more efficiently. More units per pallet means fewer vehicle movements and a lower carbon cost per unit delivered. We call some of these our ‘small but mighty’ options. Same Firechief® performance and reliability. Smaller footprint, in every sense.

Alongside this, we have introduced pricing that actively rewards customers for buying in bulk. Fewer, larger orders mean fewer individual deliveries on the road. It is a straightforward intervention with a real carbon benefit, and it makes commercial sense for our customers too. Taken together with our new compact product formats, we are cutting the carbon cost of distribution from two directions at once.

Supporting our team to travel greener

Our EV salary sacrifice scheme makes electric vehicles more affordable for team members, and uptake has been strong. Demand for on-site charging has grown to match it, so we have expanded our charging provision at HQ. All charging remains free for staff.

The daily commute is one of the most consistent sources of carbon emissions for any business. Making it easier and cheaper to drive electric has a real, repeatable impact across every working week of the year. Our Cycle to Work scheme and one day a week working from home add to this further.

Removing harmful chemicals from our products

PFAS chemicals, sometimes called ‘forever chemicals’, have been used in fire suppression products for decades. They persist in the environment and the science around their long-term impact is increasingly clear.

We have now discontinued all fire extinguishers containing PFAS from our range. The work to ensure our alternatives perform to the same standard was done before we made the switch. For a fire safety manufacturer, product integrity is non-negotiable. Removing harmful chemicals only matters if the product still works when it matters most. It does.

Moving away from plastic packaging

We are working through our range to remove all plastic packaging from our products. It is a systematic process and we are making progress. Our cardboard headcap protection packaging, developed ahead of our 2024 announcement, has been a useful foundation. The goal is straightforward: Firechief® products should not contribute to plastic waste.

The bigger picture

Our Net Zero partnership with Auditel continues. Measuring and reducing our carbon footprint is ongoing work, not a one-off exercise. The foundations we laid in 2024, including our paperless office, electronic invoicing, modular exhibition stand, and community volunteering day, remain in place and continue to count.

What strikes us when we look at 2026 is how much the progress has come from different directions at once: the roof above our head office, the new DC, the products on the pallet, the pricing on the invoice, the car in the car park. No single initiative solves this. The sum of them starts to.

As a third-generation, family-run business making fire safety products since 1963, we take the long view. We are building a business our team, our customers and our industry can be genuinely proud of.

Follow the journey

There is still a great deal to do. Every commitment we made in 2024 has moved forward, and we have added new ones. We will keep sharing updates honestly as the journey continues.

Happy Earth Day from everyone at Firechief®.
