Medium Duty Welding Blankets: Industrial-Grade Safety

News_&_insights_blog_Welding_Blankets_Medium_Duty

When you're dealing with intense brazing or moderate welding, fire safety isn't just best practice; it's a requirement. That’s where Firechief®’s Hot Works Medium-Duty Welding Blankets come in.

Engineered for higher heat and more demanding environments, these blankets are designed to contain sparks, deflect spatter, and protect people, equipment, and surroundings from fire hazards.

In this guide, we’ll explore what makes a welding blanket suitable for tougher applications, how and where to use our new medium-duty range, and what sets Firechief® products apart.

What is a medium duty welding blanket?

A medium-duty welding blanket is designed to handle more challenging hot works, such as prolonged welding, brazing, or cutting, where sparks, slag, and moderate molten metal spatter are present.

Like all welding blankets, it helps prevent fire by providing a barrier between heat sources and vulnerable surfaces. But medium-duty models are reinforced for greater durability, higher temperature resistance, and extended use.

They are commonly used to:

  • Protect industrial surfaces and equipment during welding or brazing
  • Shield nearby personnel or flammable materials
  • Line floors or walls in fabrication bays
  • Contain fire risks in mobile maintenance or confined workspaces

The Firechief® medium duty welding blanket range

Our medium-duty welding blankets are constructed from dual-sided vermiculite-coated glass fibre, a material selected for its superior heat resistance and tensile strength. Each blanket is hemmed with high-performance Kevlar® thread, and most sizes include eyelets for secure placement.

With a temperature resistance of up to 850°C, they are a dependable choice for high-risk jobs where standard protection just won’t cut it.

Available sizes include:

  • 1m x 1m (104-1125): Compact and manoeuvrable
  • 1m x 2m (104-1126): Ideal for vertical shielding
  • 2m x 2m (104-1127): Covers medium-scale work areas
  • 2m x 3m (104-1128): Provides wider coverage for industrial bays
  • 25-metre roll (104-1129): For cut-to-size applications

Each blanket (excluding the roll) comes with a reusable storage bag and is individually labelled for easy stock handling.

Key Features of the Medium Duty range include:

  • Withstands temperatures up to 850°C
  • Vermiculite-coated glass fibre fabric (dual-sided)
  • Reinforced with Kevlar® thread hemming
  • Robust tensile strength (≥1200 x 1200 N/25mm)
  • Includes eyelets for secure fastening (except roll format)
  • Available in both fixed sizes and 25m roll

Where should medium duty welding blankets be used?

This range is best suited for:

  • Engineering workshops
  • Manufacturing lines
  • Vehicle maintenance bays
  • Site-based fabrication teams
  • Industrial service and repair vans

Basically, any environment where heat exposure is moderate and safety margins must be high.

How to use your welding blanket effectively

To give yourself the optimum protection:

  • Inspect the blanket for wear or damage before use.
  • Drape the blanket loosely over or around the area to be protected.
  • Avoid tight placement, as air gaps help reduce heat transfer.
  • Let the blanket cool before folding and storing.
  • Store in a clean, dry space in the included reusable bag.

When is medium duty the right choice?

If you're regularly exposed to:

  • Extended or moderate heat
  • Prolonged welding cycles
  • Brazing or pipework soldering
  • Environments where equipment or workers need extra shielding

...then a medium duty welding blanket is your safety essential. For more extreme heat or heavy molten spatter, explore our heavy duty range.
